Study Methods That Actually Work

Not all studying is equal. Research in cognitive psychology has identified several techniques that dramatically improve learning retention — and several common approaches that feel productive but deliver little value.

Active Recall: The Most Effective Technique

Active recall means testing yourself rather than passively reviewing notes. Instead of re-reading your textbook, close it and try to write down everything you remember. This process strengthens memory pathways far more effectively than passive review. Use our flash cards and self-quiz tools to practice active recall regularly.

Spaced Repetition

Studying the same material repeatedly in one session feels productive but does not create lasting memory. Spaced repetition — reviewing material at increasing intervals over days and weeks — leads to much stronger long-term retention. Review a topic today, then again in three days, then in a week, then in two weeks. Each time you successfully recall the information, the memory becomes more durable.

The Testing Effect

Taking practice tests has been shown to improve performance on actual exams far more than spending the same amount of time reviewing material. The effort of retrieving information — even when you get it wrong — strengthens your memory more than passively looking at the answer.

Interleaving

Instead of studying one topic in a long block (called blocked practice), alternate between different topics or types of problems during a study session. This interleaved practice feels harder but produces better long-term learning and the ability to apply knowledge in new contexts.

What Does NOT Work

Highlighting and underlining text, re-reading notes, and cramming the night before an exam are common strategies that research consistently shows are among the least effective. They feel productive because they are familiar and require less mental effort, but that ease is precisely why they do not work.
